Throughout history and across cultures animals have played a central role in mythological stories and legends. In contemporary culture animals have, in some instances, come to symbolise a theme or idea, and have influenced public perception of a particular species. The bat is one such creature, carrying an association with death and the afterlife, and during the COVID pandemic this mammal has been unfairly vilified.

By representing the Australian grey-headed flying fox in my work, a listed vulnerable species, I celebrate this remarkable complex social creature and seek to raise awareness of the vital role it plays in our eco-system.
