Benjamin Armstrong made his Tolarno Galleries debut in 2008 with the opening show at Tolarno’s then new Exhibition Street gallery space and was lauded by critic Sebastian Smee in The Australian as “the most dazzling show of the new gallery season… among the strangest, most beguiling works of art produced in Australia in the past 10 years.”
His artwork ranges across several media including sculpture, printmaking and drawing. Utilising a range of materials, his objects and images bear a gentle presence and powerful simplicity, they are both graceful and disquieting. He is often innovative with materials and process. For example, whilst making recent linoleum block prints, he purposefully sought a result that aimed to be unrecognisable as a print.
Armstrong has exhibited nationally and internationally, and his work is found in many institutional and private collections around Australia and overseas.
